Student Commits Suicide After Long Battle With Depression

A University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) 100 Level Chemical Engineering student Hikmat Gbadamosi, has allegedly committed suicide after a long battle with depression. Hikmat was found dead in her room yesterday by her best friend and other girls.

According to her best friend, she has been battling a medical condition since birth and has resulted into depression for her.

Federal Government Fortifies the Release of Zainab Aliyu


The Federal Government has secured the release of Zainab Aliyu who was arrested in Saudi Arabia for alleged drug trafficking.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the government has been able to establish the innocence of Zainab and the second Nigerian involved in the case, Ibrahim Abubakar will be released tomorrow to the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia.

3 Nigerians Arrested In Ghana For 'Kidnap & Murder'


Police operatives have arrested three Nigerians over the kidnap and murder of a two-year-old boy at Kasoa Chinese in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra region, Ghana.

The two-year-old boy by name Junior got missing on April 24, 2019. His decomposing body was found hidden under rubble in an area called Tollbooth on Saturday, April 27, after he was allegedly kidnapped by some Nigerians.

Father of the deceased, Mr. Sam Abandoh in an interview with Adom News said the boy was kidnapped in front of his house by some Nigerians in a white Toyota saloon car and a black Hyundai.

Mr. Abandoh said the elder brother of the deceased told him that he had heard Junior crying in the house of the Nigerians residing in the same vicinity, but after some hours the crying stopped. He sought the help of some residents to storm the house where the Nigerians live. However, the boy was not found in the house despite a thorough search with the help of about 20 men.

Governor Dickson Discards Life Pension For Bayelsa Assembly Members


Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state has declined assent to the controversial bill passed by the state house of assembly members, seeking life pension for themselves.

The house passed a bill that would grant life pensions to speakers, deputy speakers and members.

Under the bill, which was proposed by Peter Akpe, leader of the house, former speakers will go home with N500,000 monthly, while ex-deputy speakers will receive N200,000. Twenty-four other former members are also expected to get N100,000 monthly.

Clinton Kanu falsely Imprisoned For 27 Years Seeks N20bn Compensation


A 56-year-old man, Clinton Kanu, has said he will demand a N20bn compensation for spending 27 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit.

Kanu, who was sentenced to death in 1992 for murder, was freed by the Supreme Court on April 5, 2019.

The Okigwe, Imo State-born consultant criminologist explained that though he made efforts to absolve himself from a gang-up that led to his incarceration, nobody was ready to listen to him until he was jailed.

While in prison, Kanu lost his mother; coupled with the fact that he was not married, he said he fought loneliness.

Idris Elba, British actor, has tied the knot with Sabrina Dhowre, US model, in a three-day beautiful wedding that held at a hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The beautiful couple, who got engaged in 2018, exchanged vows on Friday, at the Ksar Char-Bagh hotel in Marrakesh, according to photographs shared on the Instagram page of British Vogue.

Friends and family were treated to a bright “colours of the Souk” themed dinner on Thursday. The celebration continued on Saturday with an all-white party at the Mandarin Oriental, which will emulate the atmosphere of a festival.

Tonto Dikeh, a Nollywood actress, says female practitioners in the industry share the same men, clothes and movies.

The 33-year old actress made this disclosure in an interview with PlusTVAfrica while reacting to claims of rivalry trends in Nigeria’s movie industry.

Barely five months ago, Ayo Makun, a comedian cum movie producer, had shared a lengthy post on his Instagram post asserting that the Nigerian movie industry is a community where ‘enmity reigns supreme’.

Tonto confirmed that the intense rivalry springs from the fact that actors in the Nigerian movie industry compete for the same goal.

EFCC Arrest 32 ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’ boys in Abeokuta

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the arrest of 32 suspected internet fraudsters known as “Yahoo-Yahoo Boys” on Thursday.

The suspects ranging from the ages of 15 to 39 years were arrested at Liberty Estate, Laderin area of Abeokuta.

EFCC operatives said some of the items recovered from them were six exotic cars, laptops, mobile phones, forged documents and fetish items.

Users have experienced seizures’ — NAFDAC warns Nigerians against e-cigarettes

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians on the dangers of e-cigarettes.

Moji Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s director-general, in a statement on Thursday, said that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed that there were risks involved with the use of e-cigarettes.

She advised Nigerians who used it to desist, adding that users of the product stood the risk of having convulsion.

“NAFDAC has been informed by U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the risks involved with the use of e-cigarette,” she said.

“Most users of e-cigarettes have experienced seizures, with most reports involving youth or young adult users.

“Seizures or convulsions are known potential side effects of nicotine toxicity and have been reported in the scientific literature in relation to intentional or accidental swallowing of e-liquid.’’

MTN Nigeria goes Public ahead of Nigerian Stock Exchange Listing

MTN Nigeria has changed its status from a private company to a public liability company (PLC) ahead of its listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

This conversion is one of the requirements for listing on the exchange.

The company had previously announced that it looks to list on the NSE before July, saying it plans to enter the market by way of listing by introduction.

Speaking on the conversion, Fredi Moolman, MTN CEO, said the listing is part of its commitment to localisation in the markets in which it operates.

According to Variety, the ‘If I Were A Boy’ crooner sealed a $60 million contract with the streaming giant for three exclusive specials, including the newly released Homecoming documentary that centered on Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance.

The singer’s epic, two-hour performance marked the first time a black woman had headlined the popular music and arts festival.

Homecoming documentary, which premiered on April 17, is said to be the first of the three specials with two more films anticipated to land in a similar vein. It is reportedly worth $20 million.

A Nollywood movie director and stunt specialist, Ifeanyi Onyeabor, is dead.

The accomplished filmmaker died while filming in Jos, Plateau State, on Good Friday.

SIC Entertainment Production Nigeria Limited, a company he ran alongside his partner, Steve James, confirmed his death in a statement on Friday.

The company described him as ’’an over-achieving perfectionist who traveled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.’’

The statement partly read, ’’When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – making movies.

’’Onyeabor was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.

The Two Policemen in Abuja Who 'Killed' Civil Defence Officer

The police have arraigned two traffic Policemen, Idoko Sunday and Katdel Dabit, before a Nyanya Magistrates’ Court, over the death of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officer, Ogah Jumbo.

The two policemen were remanded in the Kuje Prisons pending the next adjournment of the case.

The police stated that their arraignment was a sequel to the outcome of an investigation into the case of alleged discreditable conduct and unlawful exercise of authority reported against them on March 20, 2019, adding that they were earlier subjected to an orderly room trial and dismissed.

Buhari Approves N30,000 Minimum Wage Bill

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law, the Minimum Wage Repeal and Re-Enactment Act, 2019.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Thursday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

According to him, the Act makes it compulsory for all employers across the country to pay workers a minimum of N30,000.

David Beckham could face a driving Ban


David Beckham could face a driving ban after admitting using his phone while driving in London.
The former England captain will appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court next month to learn what punishment he faces after being caught on his mobile in a £100,000 Bentley in central London last November.

The father-of-four pleaded guilty to the charge by post and was set to be dealt with at Lavender Hill Magistrates' Court this morning.

Sahara Energy Group set up a $600m facility in South Sudan

Sahara Energy Resources DMCC, a member of Sahara Group, leading energy and infrastructure conglomerate, says it has set up a $600 million facility in South Sudan.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Temitope Shonubi, executive director of Sahara Group, said the facility is expected to facilitate the peace process in the embattled oil-rich country and also boost the country’s economic growth.

South Sudan had been ravaged by years of civil war which came to an end in 2018 after its leaders signed a peace agreement.

Nigerian air force (NAF) loses Airman in parachuting accident in Kaduna

The Nigerian air force (NAF) says it has lost an airman in a parachuting accident in Kaduna state.
Ibikunle Daramola, the NAF director of public relations and information, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to the NAN in Abuja on Sunday, April 14, 2019.
“NAF is sad to announce the passing of one of its airmen, Corporal Meshach Iliya Komo, who died in Kaduna today, April 14 2019, in a parachuting accident during recurrency training, the statement read.

NNPC debunks rumour of impending fuel scarcity

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has urged Nigerians to disregard rumours of an impending scarcity of petrol in the country.

In a statement issued by Ndu Ughamadu, NNPC spokesman on Thursday, the corporation said such rumours were “tales fabricated by mischief makers with intent to create undue panic in the prevailing sanity in the fuel supply and distribution matrix across the country”.

Nigerian Afrobeat singer Brymo withdraws Abuja concert due to sponsorship Issues


Olawale Oloforo, Nigerian Afrobeat singer, better known as Brymo, has cancelled his 2019 Easter Sunday concert in Abuja amid sponsorship problems.

Dubbed the ‘Brymo Live in Abuja Concert’, the show was previously scheduled to hold in Abuja on April 21, 2019.

Joey Akan, Nigerian music journalist, took to Twitter to announce the cancellation on behalf of the singer, saying it was due to a sudden unresponsiveness on the part of the event sponsors.

“Brymo and his management regret to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances, we are forced to cancel the Brymo Live in Abuja Concert scheduled to hold on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2019,” the post read.

Two Killed, Many Injured as deadly Gang War Returns in Lagos

The police have confirmed that two persons were killed yesterday in a gang war in Fadeyi, Lagos, which locked down the area for hours. Scores were injured in the fight, which started around 11am.

Its cause was unknown. In a statement last night, a police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana said 33 persons were arrested in connection with the clash.

The Nation learned that those killed were a dispatch rider, who was hit by a stray bullet, and an unidentified man. The bodies have been deposited at a mortuary.

Sources said the fight started before noon, with sporadic shootings, adding that people ran for their lives. Fadeyi is notorious for cult clashes.

Lion King, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White Are Movies Filled With Racism, Experts Claims


Whether it's the old classics or the newest blockbuster, Disney films have been a huge part of children's lives for generations.

But according to experts some of the older movies many of us grew up with could actually be extremely harmful to our little ones.

Many believe films such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Lion King could promote unhealthy body image, gold diggers and even racism and domestic abuse.

According to Dr Victoria Cann, a Humanities lecturer at the University of East Anglia, Beauty and the Beast is by far the "most dangerous" Disney film.

446 Nigerians are currently serving different terms in the UAE prisons

Mohammed Rimi, Nigerian ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, says a total of 446 Nigerians are currently serving different terms in the UAE prisons.

Rimi disclosed this during President Muhammadu Buhari’s town-hall meeting with Nigerians in the Emirates on Tuesday.

The ambassador said the 446 Nigerians are serving different jail terms for crimes ranging from possession of hard drugs to engaging in robbery.

Unilag Denies Honouring E-Money With Doctorate Degree


The University of Lagos has denied awarding Emeka Okonkwo also known as Emoney with an honorary doctorate degree in Business Management and Corporate Governance.

This came after it was reported that Emoney received the Award form the University on Tuesday alongside the incoming Deputy Governor of Lagos State’s father Olatunji Hamzat.

Though Emoney on his post said the doctorate degree was given to him by the European-American University in an event held in Unilag, he never mentioned receiving the award from Unilag.

” God be the glory! I have just received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Management and Corporate Governance from the European-American University at an event that held inside the University of Lagos,” Emoney posted on Instagram on Monday.

“I’m joined here by the incoming Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr Obafemi Hamzat whose father, Olatunji Hamzat (an influential politician) also bagged a Doctorate Degree,” he added.

Unilag in a statement by its Principal Assistant Registrar, Communication Unit, for Management, Taiwo Oloyede named the personalities its awarded the doctorate degree as follows which excludes E-money’s name.

Police Command Arrest Officers Connected To The Killing Of Kolade Johnson

The policemen involved in the death of Kolade Johnson, a Lagos resident, have been arrested.

Bala Elkana, spokesman of the Lagos police command, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Johnson, a resident of Onipetesi in the Mangoro area of Lagos, was killed by a stray bullet fired when men of the anti-cultism unit of the state police command raided the area on Sunday.

A Twitter user, who posted a video about the incident, said the man — believed to be the only son of a widow — had gone to watch football when he was hit by a stray bullet.

“They came to arrest a guy that had dreadlocks and then shot sporadically after arresting the guy with dreads,” he tweeted.
